Scribonius Largus

Scribonius Largus

A Roman physician who accompanied the emperor Claudius to Britain in A.D. 43. Between that year and A.D. 48 he compiled a treatise on medical prescriptions (Compositiones Medicamentorum), which we possess in a somewhat imperfect form. It contains 271 prescriptions tested by himself, and arranged according to the parts of the body, from the head downwards. The editio princeps is that of Ruellius (Paris, 1528), and it was subsequently edited by Rhodius (with a lexicon, Padua, 1655), and Bernhold (Strassburg, 1786). The standard edition is now that of Helmreich (Leipzig, 1887).
