DANAI
DANAI[ARGOSp.202, b.; HELLAS]
Danaï
(Δαναοί). A name originally belonging to the Argives, as being, according to the common opinion, the subjects of Danaüs (q.v.). In consequence, however, of the warlike character of the race, and the high renown acquired by them, Homer uses the name Danaï as a general appellation for the Greeks, when that of Hellenes was still confined to a narrower range. See Danaüs.
