Gherla

GHERLA Cluj, Romania.

Roman camp, flourishing civil settlement, and necropolis, now covered by modern buildings. Two military diplomas were discovered here, dated 123 and 133, testifying to the existence of Dacia Porolisensis.

The earthen camp (162 x 169 m) was later rebuilt in stone. Ala II Pannoniorum, which also built the baths situated 200 m away, was stationed in this camp.

The archaeological material, including inscription, fragments of architecture and sculpture, weapons, bronze statuettes and coins, are to be found at the History Museum in Gherla, the Museum of History of Transylvania in Cluj, and the Museum of History of the Socialist Republic of Romania.
