HAMAXOECI

HAMAXOECI (Ἁμάξοικοι, Eustath. ad Hom. Il. 13.5; Hesiod. ap. Strab. 7. p. 302; Hdt. 4.46; Aesch. Prom. 709; Strab. 2. p. 87, 7. p.209, 11. p.492). This name was applied by the ancients to the Nomadic hordes who roamed over the N. E. of Europe, neither sowing nor planting,--but living on food derived from animals, especially mares' milk, and cheese,--and moved from place to place, carrying their families in waggons covered with wicker and leather, in the same manner as the Tartars of the present day.
