Hercynia Silva, Hercynius Saltus, Hercynium Iugum
Hercynia Silva, Hercynius Saltus, Hercynium Iugum
An extensive range of mountains in Germany, covered with forests, described by Caesar (B. G. vi. 24, 25) as nine days' journey in breadth, and more than sixty days' journey in length, extending east from the territories of the Helvetii, Nemetes, and Rauraci, parallel to the Danube, to the frontiers of the Dacians. Under this general name Caesar appears to have included all the mountains and forests in the south and centre of Germany. The name is still preserved in the modern Harz and Erz. See Germania.
