Iaxartes
(Ἰαξάρτης). The modern Syr Daria, or Sihûn; a great river of Central Asia, flowing northwest into the Sea of Aral; the ancients supposed it to fall into the north side of the Caspian, not distinguishing between the two seas. It divided Sogdiana from Scythia. On its banks dwelt a Scythian tribe called Iaxartae.
