Nertobriga
- A city in Hispania Baetica, surnamed Concordia Julia, now Valera la Vieja, Plin. 3, 1, 3, § 14.—
- II A city of Celtiberia, now Almunia, Flor. 2, 17, 10.
NERTOBRIGA (Νερτόβριγα).
1.A town of Hispania Baetica (Ptol. 2.4.13), also called by Pliny (Plin. Nat. 3.1. s. 3) Concordia Julia, the modern Valera la vieja. It is named Ἐρκόβρικα in the copies of Polybius (Plb. 35.2), by an omission of the N. (Ukert, vol. ii. pt. 1. p. 381.)
2.A town of the Celtiberi in Hispania Tarraconensis, on the road from Emerita to Caesaraugusta. It is called by Appian Νεργόβριγα (Hisp. 50), and by Suidas Νεργόβριγες : now Almunia. (Ptol. 2.6.58; Florus (Flor. 2.17; Ant. Itin. 437; Ukert, vol. ii. pt. 1. p. 460.) [T.H.D]
(1) A city of Hispania Baetica, some distance to the west of Corduba. It was also called Concordia Iulia, and is now Valera la Vieja (Pliny , Pliny H. N. iii. 14).
(2) A city of Hispania Tarraconensis, in the territory of the Celtiberi, between Bilbilis and Caesaraugusta. It is now Almuña.
The present town 50 km SW of Zaragoza, NE of Calatayud, was constructed on the ruins of a Roman villa excavated a few years ago which, from its mosaics, can be dated to the 3d c. A.D.
The exact location of the Celtiberian city and the mansio on the Roman road is uncertain, in spite of an attempt to identify it with Roman ruins, probably villas, near Calatorae. Recent excavations in Cabezo Chinchón, between Calatorae and Almunia, have unearthed a prehistoric settlement of the 6th and 5th c. B.C., but no Celtiberian establishment. The indigenous city, often referred to in military events of the 2d c. B.C., which minted coins bearing the inscription NERTOBIS in the Iberian alphabet, must lie in the Ricla-Calatora-La Almunia triangle.
