Thuin

THUIN Belgium.

The town, on the right bank of the Sambre, formerly seemed no earlier than the 9th c. A.D. since no remains of the Roman period had been found there except for two hoards of coins, one buried during the reign of Septimus Severus, the other after 246. However, a necropolis, excavated in 1963 and 1964, disclosed ca. 55 cremation tombs with rather poor grave goods. It was in use between the end of the 2d c. and the middle of the 3d. There was, therefore, a Roman establishment at Thuin, but at present it is impossible to determine whether it was a vicus or a villa.
