kalpis

A three-handled vase similar to the hydria.

Shape: The neck is comparatively smaller (than the neck hydria), and the belly passes into the shoulder, and the shoulder into the neck, in a continuous curve; it has a rolled lip.

History: The kalpis is introduced by about 520 B.C. and is the preferred style of the red-figure painters. This form survives down to Hellenistic times.

Term: Kalpis is said to be the Thessalian word for hydria.
