miltos
Fine red chalk-like powder used in construction to judge the smoothness of a block. Also added to glaze for red-figure painting to give it a "blush" color.
Description: The red powder was spread on a column drum or a block and the above drum or block was placed on top of the powder. Any of the powder not completely smoothed by the weight of the upper block meant the more carving or filing was necessary.
