Aganippe
(Ἀγανίππη).
1. A nymph of the well of the same name at the foot of Mount Helicon, in Boeotia, which was considered sacred to the Muses, and believed to have the power of inspiring those who drank of it. The nymph is called a daughter of the river-god Permessus. (Paus. 9.29.3; Verg. Ecl. 10.12.) The Muses are sometimes called Aganippides.
Aganippe
2. The wife of Acrisius, and according to some accounts the mother of Danae, although the latter is more commonly called a daughter of Eurydice. (Hyg. Fab. 63; Schol. ad Apollon. Rhod. 4.1091.) [L.S]
Aganippé
(Ἀγανίππη). A spring on Mount Helicon, near Thespiae in Boeotia, sacred to the Muses, who were called from it Aganippides. Its water was believed to impart poetic inspiration.
