MELANTHIUS
MELA´NTHIUS(Μελάνθιος), a small river on the north coast of Pontus, forming the boundary between Pontus Polemoniacus and Cappadocius, and flowing into the Euxine a little to the east of Cotyora. (Plin. Nat. 6.4; Arrian, Peripl. p. 17; Anonym. Peripl. p. 12; Tab. Peut., where it is called Melantus.) It is probably the same river as that now bearing the name of Melet Irmak. (Μελάνθιος). (1) A goat-herd of Odysseus.
(2) An Athenian tragic poet attacked by Aristophanes (Pax, 796, and elsewhere).
(3) A Greek painter of the Sicyonian School, contemporary with Apelles (B.C. 332), with whom he studied under Pamphilus (Pliny , Pliny H. N. xxxv. 50).
