SCALABIS
SCA´LABIS a town of Lusitania, on the road from Olisipo to Emerita and Bracara. (Itin. Ant. pp. 420, 421.) Pliny (Plin. Nat. 4.21. s. 35) calls it a Roman colony, with the surname Praesidium Julium, and the seat of one of the three conventus juridicio f Lusitania. It is undoubtedly the same place which Ptolemy (Ptol. 2.5.7) erroneously calls Σκαλαβίσκος, which is probably a corruption of Σκαλαβίς κολ. (κολωνία) The modern Santarem. (Cf. Wesseling, ad Itin. l. c.; Isidor. de Vir. Ill. 100.44; Florez, Esp. Sagr. 13. p. 69.)
