Zilia

ZILIA(Mel. 3.10; Ζιλείαor Λιξεία, Ptol. 4.1.2), a river on the W. coast of Mauretania Tingitana, which fell into the sea near the town of the same name, N. of the Lixius. It is still called Ar-Zila.

ZILIA(Mel. 3.10; Ζιλία, Ζιλεῖαι, and Ζειλία, Ptol. 4.1.13, 8.13.4; Ζῆλιςand Ζέλης, Strab. 17. p. 827, 3. p. 140), a town of some importance on the W. coast of Mauretania Tingitana, at the mouth of the like-named river, and on the road from Lix to Tingis, from which latter place it was 24 miles distant ( Itin. Ant. p. 8, where, and in Plin. Nat. 5.1. s. 1, it is called Zilis). It was founded by the Carthaginians, and made a colony by the Romans, with the surname of Julia Constantia. (Plin. l. c.) According to Strabo (3. p. 140), the Romans transplanted the inhabitants, as well as some of the citizens of Tingis, to Julia Joza in Spain. The place is still called Azzila, Azila, Ar-Zila.
