ginglymus

Ginglymus

(γίγγλυμος). Literally, a joint which moves in a socket, like the elbow; thence a hinge (Xen. Eq. xii. 6), the action of which resembles that of a joint in the human frame. The cabinets of antiquities contain numerous specimens of these contrivances, framed in the different patterns in use at this day, and of all sizes. Of the two examples here given, the first is from Pompeii, the other is preserved in the British Museum. The Latin name is not met with in any Roman writer, and consequently requires authority; but the Greek one is undoubted.
