ἀάατος, (ἀάαω), unverletzlich, Hom. ἀάατον Στυγὸς ὕδωρ, Il. 14.271, das Wasser der Styx als Zeuge der unverbrüchlichen Eidschwüre der Götter ; κάρτος Ap.Rh. 2.77.

ἀάατος
[perh., with ἀ-1 for ἀν-1, ἀάϝατος, fr. ἀϝάω. See ἀάζω.]
Thus, not liable to ἄτη, that cannot be taken in vain, unimpeachable, decisive: ἀ̆άατον Στυγὸς ὕδωρ Il. 18.271: ἄεθλον ἀάατον Od. 21.91, ἄεθλος ἀάατος Od. 22.5.
ἀάατος (ἀϝάω): of doubtful meaning. —(1) inviolable (if α privative), νυν μοι ὄμοσσον ἀάᾱτον Στυγὸς ὕδωρ, Il. 14.271; cf. Στυγὸς ὕδωρ, ὅς τε μέγιστος| ὅρκος δεινότατός τε πέλει μακάρεσσι θεοῖσιν, Il. 15.37f.—(2) baleful (if α copulative), or mad, of the suitorsʼ contest with the bow, Od. 21.81 (echoed by Odysseus, Od. 22.5). —Signif. (2) may be assumed in Il. 14 instead of (1), representing the Styx as baleful to him who swears falsely in its name.

- ἀάατος: in Od. with penult. short, hurtful, perilous, aweful; ἄεθλος ἀάατος.
