Cassiotis

CASSIOTIS

CASSIO´TIS (Κασσιῶτις), a district of northern Syria, containing, according to Ptolemy (Ptol. 5.15.16), the cities of ANTIOCHEIA, DAPHNE, BACTAIALLA, LYDIA, SELEUCEIA, EPIPHANEIA, RAPHANEA, ANTARADUS, MARATHUS, MARIAME, and MAMURGA. It probably was never considered as a political division (comp. Marquardt, Handbuch der Röm. Alt. p. 176), but was rather a district marked out by the natural features of the country. [SYRIA] (Chesney, Exped. Euphrat. vol. i.; Thomson, Bibl. Sacr. vol. v.)
