ERYMANTHUS (Ἐρυμανθός), a lofty range of mountains on the frontiers of Arcadia, Achaia, and Elis. It formed the western point of the northern barrier of Arcadia; and Mt. Lampeia, which extends southwards, is a portion of the range. The two principal heights are now called O´lonos and Kalèfoni, the former being 7297 feet above the level of the sea, and the latter 6.227 feet. From Erymanthus four rivers rise,--the Eleian Peneius, the Arcadian Erymanthus, and the Peirus and Selinus of Achaia. The river Erymanthus, which is a tributary of the Achelous, is spoken of under the latter name. [ACHELOUS] Mount Erymanthus is celebrated in mythology as the haunt of the fierce boar destroyed by Hercules. (Strab. viii. pp. 343, 357; Paus. 5.7.1, 8.24.4, seq.; Hom. Od. 6.104; Apollod. 2.5; Leake, Morea. vol. ii. p. 253, Peloponneaiaca, pp. 203, 204, 224; Boblaye, Recherches, &c. pp. 118, 124; Curtius, Peloposnesos, vol. i. pp. 17, 384.).
(Ἐρύμανθος). (1) A mountainchain in the northwest angle of Arcadia, celebrated in fable as the haunt of the savage boar destroyed by Heracles (Apollod.ii. 5. 3; Pausan. viii. 24; Ho mer, Od. vi. 103). Apollonius places the Erymanthian monster in the wilds of Mount Lampea; but this mountain was that part of the chain where the river Erymanthus took its rise.
(2) A river of Arcadia, descending from the mountain of the same name, and flowing near the town of Psophis. After receiving another small stream, called the Aroanius, it joins the Alpheus on the borders of Elis. The modern name of the Erymanthus is the Dogana.
