(Μελανίππη).
1. A daughter of Cheiron, is also called Euippe. Being with child by Aeolus, she fled to mount Pelion; but Cheiron made search after her; and in order that her condition might not become known, she prayed to be metamorphosed into a mare. Artemis granted the prayer, and in the form of a horse she was placed among the stars. (Eratosth. Catust. 18; Aristoph. Thes. 512; Hyg. Fab. 86.) Another account describes her metamorphosis as a punishment for having despised Artemis or divulged the counsels of the gods. (Hygin. Poet. Astr. 2.18.)
2. The wife of Hippotes and the mother of Aeolus. (Diod. 4.67.)
3. A daughter of Aeolus, or, according to others, of Hippotes or Desmontes. (Schol. ad Hom. Od. 10.2; Hyg. Fab. 186.)
4. A queen of the Amazons, whom Heracles, in his fight with the Amazons, restored to freedom in consequence of a present she gave him. (Diod. 4.16; Schol. ad Pind. Nem. 3.64; Apollon. 2.966.) For two other mythical personages of this name, see Boeotus and Meleager. [L.S]
MELANIPPE or MELANIPPIUM (Μελανίππη or Μελανίππιον), a small town on the coast of Lycia, on the western slope of Mount Phoenicus, about 30 stadia from Cape Hieron, and 60 stadia south of Gagae, of which Leake (Asia Minor, p. 185) believes it to have been the port town. (Hecat. Fraym. 247; Steph. B. s. v., who erroneously calls it a river; Quint. Smyrn. 3.232; Stadiasm, Mar. M. § § 210, 211.) Fellows (Discov. in Lycia, p. 212) found a few tombs cut out of the cliffs of the neighbourhood.
[L.S](Μελανίππη). Daughter of Chiron, also called Evippé. Being with child by Aeolus, she fled to Mount Pelion, and was there metamorphosed by Artemis into a mare, and placed among the stars as a constellation (Hyg. Fab. 86).
