Zoara
ZOARA
ZOARA (Ζοάρα, Steph. B. s. v.), a small town at the southern end of the Lacus Asphaltites in Judaea, to which Lot escaped from the burning of Sodom. (Gen. 14.2, 8, 19.22.) Josephus, in describing the same lake, states that it extends μέχρι Ζοάρων Ἀραβίας (4.100.27). During the latter times of the Roman Empire, there was a guard maintained in that part of the country, a corps of native mounted bowmen ( Equites sagittarii Indigenae Zoarae), who were under the command of the Dux Palaestinae.
