ampyx
Ampyx
(ἄμπυξ). (1) A frontlet or band worn by Greek ladies to confine the hair; passing around the front of the head and fastened behind. It was often of gold or silver, and adorned with precious stones. Hesychius supposes men to have worn frontlets in Lydia; and they appear to have been worn also by the Jews.
(2) A frontlet worn by horses, and sometimes by elephants, often highly ornamented.
