prohedria

prohedria

Front seats in the theater, reserved for officials.

Description: The privilege of using the prohedria in the theater was given as an honor to priests and various officials. These seats consisted of the front row in each kerkis. One of the principal spectators was the priest of the god Dionysos-Eleuthereus; the epithet applied to the god Dionysos, in honor of his introduction from Eleutherai, in Boetia. This priest had his seat in the middle of the front row of the theatron. Beside him sat the other priests and officials, while the lesser priests and priestesses sat in the second tier of seats.
