Itala
Ităla
The name given to a Latin version of the Scriptures, used by Tertullian in his Biblical quotations. (Cf. St. Doctr. Christ. ii. 15.) It followed the Septuagint in the Old Testament, and mingled Graecisms, Hebraisms, and plebeian Latin. Its form largely influenced the existing Vulgate. See H. Rönsch, Itala und Vulgata (2d ed. Marburg, 1875); Linke, Studien z. Itala (Breslau, 1889); and the articles Hieronymus; sermo plebeius.
