Nessonis

Nessōnis

(Νεσσωνίς). A lake in Thessaly, a little south of the river Peneus, usually reduced in summer to a mere marsh. The ancients regarded it as the remains of a vast body of water which they supposed to have at one time covered the whole of Thessaly and finally to have been drawn off through the vale of Tempe (Strabo, p. 430).
