Salmōneus (trisyll.), eī, m.: Salmoneus, king, of Elis, son of Aeolus and brother of Sisyphus; for attempting to imitate the thunder of Jupiter, cast into Tartarus by a thunderbolt, 6.585.

Salmōne͡us, eī u. eos, Akk. ea, m. (Σαλμωνεύς), Sohn des Äolus, Bruder des Sisyphus, Vater der Tyro u. König in Elis, dort Erbauer der Stadt Salmone, wagte voll Übermut sich dem Zeus gleichzustellen und ließ sich Opfer darbringen. Mit Fellen u. Kesseln od. mit seinem Wagen ahmte er den Donner, mit Fackeln den Blitz nach. Zeus erschlug ihn mit seinem Blitzstrahle, zerstörte seine Stadt u. ließ ihn in der Unterwelt bestrafen, Verg. Salmōneus
(Σαλμωνεύς). Son of Aeolus and Enareté and brother of Sisyphus. He originally lived in Thessaly, but emigrated to Elis, where he built the town of Salmoné. His presumption and arrogance were so great that he deemed himself equal to Zeus, and ordered sacrifices to be offered to himself; nay, he even imitated the thunder and lightning of Zeus, but the father of the gods killed him with his thunderbolt, destroyed his town, and punished him in the lower world (Verg. Aen. vi. 585). His daughter Tyro bore the patronymic Salmonis.
