assarion
ASSARION
ASSARIONThe Greek word ἀσσάριον is merely a rendering used in Polybius and other writers of the Latin as. Thus it is in the first place used only of Roman money. But when the denarius had become the currency of the world, assaria were minted in many parts of the Levant. Late coins of Chios frequently bear an inscription marking them as 3, 2, or 1 1/2 assaria. And they are so light that either they were mere money of account, or else they show that the as in the island of Chios and probably elsewhere was of small value. (Cf. Dictionary of the Bible, s. v. Farthing.)
