• loosen beneath or below, ὑπέλυσε δὲ γυῖα made his limbs give way under him (by giving him a deadly wound), Il. 15.581; πολλῶν ἀνδρῶν ὑπὸ γούνατʼ ἔλυσε Od. 14.236; ὑπέλυσε μένος καὶ φαίδιμα γυῖα made courage and strength fail, Il. 6.27; of wrestlers, ὑπέλυσε δὲ γυῖα 23.726:—Pass., ὑπέλυντο δὲ γυῖα 16.341; λύθεν δʼ ὑπὸ φαίδιμα γυῖα ib. 805; ὑπολύεταί μου τὰ γόνατα Ar. ὑπολύω, (λύω),
1) darunter lösen, auflösen, ein wenig, allmälig lösen ; ὑπέλυσε γυῖα, er löste ihm die Glieder unter dem Leibe, machte, daß ihm die Füße erschlafften, von Getöteten oder tödlich Verwundeten, Il. 15.581 ; eben so μένος καὶ γυῖα Il. 6.27 ; auch vom Ringer, γυῖα ὑπέλυσε, Il. 23.726, er machte ihm die Füße unter dem Leibe wankend, er stellte ihm ein Bein ; u. pass., γυῖα ὑπέλυντο 16.341. Vgl. auch noch das als Tmesis hierher gerechnete häufige ὑπὸ γούνατʼ ἔλυσεν u. λύθεν δʼ ὑπὸ φαίδιμα γυῖα Il. 16.805 ; ὑπολύεταί μου τὰ γόνατα Ar. Lys. 216.
2) darunter loslösen, Zugtiere unter dem Joche losspannen, wie Hom. sagt οἱ δʼ ἵππους μὲν λῦσαν ὑπὸ ζυγοῦ, Od. 4.39, u. ὁ δʼ ἔλυεν ὑφʼ ἵππους Il. 23.513 ; und übh. darunter befreien.
Med. sich losmachen, πρῶτος ὑπʼ ἀρνειοῦ λυόμην Od. 9.463, einen Andern befreien, σὺ τόν γʼ ἐλθοῦσα, θεά, ὑπελύσαο δεσμῶν Il. 1.401. – Im engern Sinne, die Sohlen losbinden, die Schuhe ausziehen, ὑπολύετε, παῖδες, Ἀλκιβιάδην Plat. Symp. 213b ; vgl. Ar. Nub. 153, Thesm. 1183 ; u. med. im Ggstz von ὑποδεῖσθαι sich die Schuhe ausziehen, Lys. 950, Plut. 927 ; Xen. An. 4.5.13 ; τὰς κρηπῖδας Plut. Arat. 21.
