Arcadius
Emperor of the East, elder son of Theodosius I., and brother of Honorius (q. v.), who received the Western Empire. Arcadius was both weak and vicious, a tool of favourites, and an inefficient ruler. During his reign Alaric (q. v.) ravaged the Empire. Arcadius ruled from A.D. 395 to 408.
