Periclymenus
- son of Neleus and brother of Nestor, one of the Argonauts, who had received from Neptune the power of changing his shape at pleasure, Ov. M. 12, 556.
(Περικλύμενος).
1. One of the Argonauts, was a son of Nelens and Chloris, and a brother of Nestor. (Hom. Od. 11.285 ; Apollod. 1.9.15; Orph. Aryon. 155.) Poseidon gave him the power of changing himself into different foims, and confierred upon him great strength, but he was nevertheless slain by Heracles at the taking of Pylos. (Apollod. 1.9.9, 2.7.3 ; Apollon. 1.156 with the Schol.; Ov. Met. 13.556, &c.; Eustath. ad Hom. p. 1685.) According to Hyginus (Hyg. Fab. 10) Periclymenus escaped Heracles in the shape of an eagle.
2. A son of Poseidon and Chloris, the daughter of Teiresias, of Thebes. In the war of the Seven against Thebes he was believed to have killed Parthenopaeus (Apollod. 3.6.8; Paus. 8.18, in fin.; Eur. Phoen. 1157), and when he pursued Amphiaraus, the latter by the command of Zeus was swallowed up by the earth. (Pind. N. 9.57. &c. with the Schol.) [L.S]
(Περικλύμενος), a statuary of unknown age and country, is enumerated by Pliny among those who made athletas et armatos ct venatores sacrificantesque (H. N. 34.8. s. 19.34). One of his works, a female statue, is mentioned by Tatian (ad v. Graec. 55. p. 118, ed. Worth.). [P.S]
(Περικλύμενος). (1) Son of Neleus and Chloris, brother of Nestor. He is the chief hero of the defence of Pylos against Heracles, to whom he gave much trouble by his prowess as well as by his power of transforming himself, like the sea-gods, into every possible shape. This power had been given him by Poseidon, who was reputed to be his father. Finally he succumbed to the arrows of Heracles, and by his death sealed the doom of Pylos.
(2) A Theban, son of Poseidon and Chloris, daughter of the seer Tiresias. In the war of the Seven against Thebes he slew Parthenopaeus, and was in pursuit of Amphiaraüs at the moment when the latter sank into the earth. See Seven against Thebes.
