Terpander
Terpander, drī, m. , Terpandre [poète et musicien grec] : Plin. 7, 204.
Terpander
(Τέρπανδρος). The father of Greek music, and through it of lyric poetry. He was a native of Antissa in Lesbos, and flourished between B.C. 700 and 650 (Plut. De Mus. 30, p. 1141). He established the first musical school or system that existed in Greece, and added three strings to the lyre, which before his time had only four. The few remains of his verse are printed by Bergk in his lyrical collections. See musica.
