ἰάλλω

ἰάλλω, Att. ἱάλλω acc. to Hdn.Gr. 1.539, cf. ἐφιάλλω: fut. ἰᾰλῶ (ἐπ-) Ar. Nu. 1299: aor. ἴηλα Il. 15.19, Dor. ἴᾱλα Sophr. 14. [ῐ, unless augmented; Hom. never uses the augm.]:—

• send forth, ὀϊστὸν ἀπὸ νευρῆφιν ἴαλλεν Il. 8.300, 309, cf. AP 5.187 (Leon.): used by Hom. mostly in phrase, ἐπʼ ὀνείατα χεῖρας ἴαλλον they put forth their hands to the dishes, Od. 1.149, al.; ἐπὶ σίτῳ χ. ἰ. 10.376; ἑτάροις ἐπὶ χεῖρας ἴ. laid hands upon his comrades, 9.288; περὶ χερσὶ δὲ δεσμὸν ἴηλα threw chains around thy arms, Il. 15.19; ἐπὶ δεσμὸν ἴηλε Od. 8.447; so later ὑλακήν give tongue, AP 7.69 (Jul.Aegypt.); ἴχνος set down, plant the foot, Nic. Al. 242.

ἰάλλω, (ἵημι, nach Arcad. p. 197 ἱάλλω), schicken, senden, werfen ; ὀϊστὸν ἀπὸ νευρῆφιν ἴαλλεν Il. 8.300, den Pfeil von der Bogensehne abschießen ; ἐπὶ σῖτον χεῖρας ἰάλλειν, die Hände nach der Speise ausstrecken, Od. 10.375, oft ἐπʼ ὀνείαθʼ ἕτοιμα προκείμενα χεῖρας ἴαλλον ; aber ἑτάροις ἐπὶ χεῖρας ἴαλλεν, 9.288, = legte Hand an sie, streckte seine Fäuste gegen sie aus (vgl. ἐπιάλλω); θοῶς δʼ ἐπὶ δεσμὸν ἴηλε 8.447, wie περὶ χερσὶ δὲ δεσμὸν ἴηλα χρύσεον, legte um die Hände eine Fessel, Il. 15.19 ; übertr., ἀτιμίῃσιν ἰάλλειν τινά Od. 13.141, mit Schimpf bewerfen, Schimpf antun ; – ἐπὶ Δωδώνης θεοπρόπους ἴαλλεν, sendete er nach Dodona, Aesch. Prom. 662 ; Δίκην – σύμμαχον φίλοις Ch. 490 ; sp.D.; Φθίᾳ γὰρ ἐλεύθερον ἦμαρ ἰ ἀλλων Theodorid. 13 (VII.529); ὑλακήν, bellen, Iul. Bei Hes. Th. 269 von den Harpyen, μεταχρόνιοι γὰρ ἴαλλον, intr., sc. ἑαυτάς, eilten, schwebten herbei. – Adj. verb., ἰαλτὸς ἐκ δόμων ἔβην Aesch. Ch. 22.
