ῥάβδος, ἡ,

• rod, wand, Hom. (v. infr.), etc.; lighter than the βακτηρία or walking-stick, X. Eq. 11.4 (but = βακτηρία, Ev.Matt. 10.10, al.). —Special uses:
• • • 1 magic wand, as that of Circe, Od. 10.238, 319, etc.; that with which Athena touched Odysseus, to restore his youthful appearance, χρυσείῃ ῥάβδῳ ἐπεμάσσατο 16.172; that with which Hermes overpowers the senses of man, Il. 24.343; that with which Hades rules the ghosts, Pi. O. 9.33; divining-rod, Hdt. 4.67.
    • 2 fishing-rod, Od. 12.251.
    • 3 limed twig, for catching small birds, Ar. Av. 527.
    • 4 shaft of a hunting-spear, X. Cyn. 10.3, 16.
    • 5 staff of office, like the earlier σκῆπτρον, Pl. Ax. 367a, LXX Ps. 44(45).7, 109(110).2; carried by a βραβευτής, Phld. Vit. p.25 J.:— dub. in A. Supp. 248 for ῥαβδοῦχος.
    • 6 wand borne by the ῥαψῳδός, τὸν ἐπὶ ῥάβδῳ μῦθον ὑφαινόμενον Call. Fr. 138 ( = Fr. 3.10P.), cf. Paus. 9.30.3: hence κατὰ ῥάβδον ἐπέων according to the measure of his (Homerʼs) verses, Pi. I. 4(3).38(56).

1) Rute, Gerte, Stab ; bes.
   a) eine Zauberrute, die in andere Gestalten verwandelt ; vom Zauberstabe der Circe, Od. 10.238, 319, 389 ; der Athene, 13.429, 16.172, 456, des Hermes, τῇ τʼ ἀνδρῶν ὄμματα θέλγει, τούς τʼ αὖτε καὶ ὑπνώοντας ἐγείρει, Il. 24.343, Od. 5.47, 24.2 ; – auch Angelrute, περιμήκης, 12.251.
   b) der Stab als Zeichen der Würde, Herrscher-, Richterstab, wie σκῆπτρον, ἀκινήταν ἔχε ῥάβδον ᾍδας, Pind. Ol. 9.33 ; – auch das Abzeichen der Rhapsoden, I. 3.56, vgl. Dissen dazu.
   c) Stock, Rute zum Schlagen ; κοσμούσης ῥάβδου νουθέτησις, Plat. Legg. III.700c, vgl. Ax. 367a ; μάστιξ ἢ ῥάβδος, Xen. Hipp. 8.4 ; ῥάβδῳ κρούειν, 11.4 ; vgl. Hdn. 7.9.13 ; Plut. oft.
   d) Schaft eines Wurfspießes, Xen. Cyn. 10.3, 16 ; Poll. 5.20 erkl. προβόλιον ; dah. αἱ ῥάβδοι die Rutenbündel, fasces der röm. Lictoren. Bei Ar. Av. 587 wird es vom Schol. als εἶδος δικτύου ὃ χρίουσιν ἰξῷ erkl., u. dafür die v.l. σταυροί angeführt.
2) Strich, Streifen, βοείας ῥάψε θαμειὰς χρυσείῃς ῥάβδοισι διηνεκέσιν, Il. 12.297. – In Steinen od. Metallgängen die Adern, Theophr. – An Kleidern, Poll. 7.53. – Streifen am Himmel, was wir nennen »die Sonne zieht Wasser« ; Arist. mund. 4 ; Plut. plac.phil. 3.6. – Zeile, Vers, Gramm. S. Schol. Pind. I. 3.56 u. Erkl. daselbst. – Auch als diakritisches Zeichen, = ὀβελός.
Bei Aesch. Suppl. 245 wird es = ῥαβδοφόρος erkl., aber die Lesart ist unsicher. – Die Akzentuation ῥᾶβδος, von Eust. angeführt, ist von Bekker im Arist. aufgenommen. – Verwandt mit ῥάσσω, ῥαπίς.
