Acelum
A´CELUM(Asolo), a town of the interior of Venetia, situated near the foot of the Alps, about 18 miles NW. of Treviso. (Plin. Nat. 3.19. s. 23; Ptol. 3.1.30.) The name is written Ἄκεδονin our editions of Ptolemy, but the correctness of the form Acelum given by Pliny is confirmed by that of the modern town. We learn from Paulus Diaconus (3.25, where it is corruptly written Acilium), that it was a bishop's see in the 6th century.
[E.H.B]A city in the Veneto region (Plin. 3.130; Ptol. 3.1.30), between Treviso and Feltre, to the W of the Via Claudia Augusta. In the surrounding territory have been found manifestations of the Paleolithic Age, remains of elephas primigenius and an Iron Age necropolis It was probably a Roman municipium ascribed to the Claudia tribus. The ruins of a theater are visible, with parts of the scaena and of the cavea, as well as a bath building. In the Civic Museum are fragments of architectural decoration from the theater, funerary monuments, and small bronzes.
