• very thirsty, of ill-watered countries, Ἄργος Il. 4.171, Q.S. 3.570. (Expld. as = πολυπόθητος by Str. 8.6.7, Ath. 10.433e; Str.also suggests πολυΐψιος (fr. ἴπτω), much-destroyed.)

πολυδίψιος, viel durstend ; daher vom Lande = sehr dürr, wasserarm ; Ἄργος, Il. 4.171, was Sp. nachahmen, wie Luc. D.Mar. 6.2 ; andere alte Ausleger erklärten es = πολυπόθητος, wonach man durstet, sehr ersehnt, vgl. Ath. X.433e, oder lasen nach Strab. 8.6.7 gar πολυΐψιος, sehr verderblich, denn es sei nicht wasserarm ; aber nach den alten Mythen Ἄργος ἄνυδρον ἐὸν Δαναὸς ποίησεν ἔνυδρον, Hes. frg. 58.
