ἀμυνάθω
ἀμυνάθω, to defend, assist
ἀμῡν-άθω, pres. assumed by Gramm., cf. Hdn.Gr. 1.440, 2.782, as lengthd. form of ἀμύνω: but forms so accented in codd. are best taken to belong to aor. ἠμύναθον and written ἀμυναθεῖν (so Hsch.), -θοῦ, cf. ἀλκαθεῖν:—
- defend, assist, c. dat. pers., εἰ σοῖς φίλοις ἀμυναθεῖν χρῄζεις E. Andr. 1079, cf. IA 910; ἀμυνάθετέ μοι Ar. Nu. 1323: abs., ἄξιαι δʼ ἀμυναθεῖν [αἱ ξυμφοραί] S. OC 1015:—Med., ward off from oneself, repel, τόνδʼ ἀμυναθοῦ ψόγον A. Eu. 438; take vengeance on, μὴ . . ἀμυνάθοιτό σε E. Andr. 721.

ἀμυνάθω, [ῡ], = ἀμύνω, nur inf., Soph. O.C. 1019 ; Eur. Andr. 1080 ; part., Iph.A. 910 ; imperat., Ar. Nub. 1305 ; med. in derselben Bdtg, ἀμυνάθου, Aesch. Eum. 416 ; optat., Eur. Andr. 722. Richtiger als aor.2 zu betrachten und daher, ἀμυναθών, ἀμυναθοῦ zu akzentuieren.
ἀμυνάθω
= ἀμύνω.
the forms assigned to this verb belong to an aor2, ἠμύναθον, hence the irregular infinitive and imperative (cf. ἐργαθεῖν, σχέθω): the inf. therefore is ἀμῡναθεῖν not ἀμῡνάθειν, while the imperative is ἀμῡναθοῦ, not ἀμῡνάθου.
