In Od. 19.179 (Μίνως ἐ. βασίλευε Διὸς ὀαριστής
) the reference seems to be to an eight-yearly tenure of kingship. See Frazer, Golden Bough, 3 rd ed., Part iii. Od. 17.58 foll., esp. Od. 17.70.On the analogy of διὰ τρίτης ἡμέρας, every second day, and similar expressions, ἐ. is to be translated by terms of eight years, fresh kingly power being supposed to be imparted in converse with Zeus at the end of each term.
