Lobeck , Christian August

A distinguished Greek scholar, born at Naumburg, June 5, 1781. He was Corrector at Wittenberg, 1802; Professor Extraordinarius, 1810-14; and Professor Ordinarius and Librarian at Königsberg, 1814-60. His principal writings consist of contributions to the study of Greek grammar and mythology, including Paralipomena Grammaticae (2 vols. 1837); Aglaophamus (2 vols. 1829); and Pathologiae Sermonis Graeci Prolegomena (1843). The Aglaophamus treats especially of the Orphic sect and literature, and is a monument of accurate and exhaustive scholarship. He also edited some Greek texts, among them the Ajax of Sophocles, with a good commentary. See Bursian, Geschichte der class. Philologie in Deutschland, pp. 572-575, 711- 713 (Berlin, 1883).
