ἔχμα, ατος, τό, (ἔχω)

  • II holdfast, stay, ἔχματα πέτρης the grip of the rock (viz. the river-bed), Il. 13.139; ἔχματα πύργων buttresses of the fortifications, 12.260; ἔχματα νηῶν props or cradles for the ships, 14.410; ἔχματα γαίης, of the earth which holds fast the roots of a tree, A.R. 1.1200; ἔχματα γούνων, of muscles, Nic. Th. 724:—also ἐχμός, ὁ, Eust. 1411.24.

Merc. 37 ; ἀσπίδας δηΐων θοὸν ἔχμα βολάων προσχόμενοι Ap.Rh. 4.201 ; – Il. 13.139 ῥήξας ἀσπέτῳ ὄμβρῳ ἀναιδέος ἔχματα πέτρης, die Bänder, das, was den Stein am Felsen festhielt, sprengend, wie Ap.Rh. 1.1199 Herakles einen Baum ausreißt σὺν αὐτοῖς ἔχμασι γαίης, mit der in den Wurzeln haftenden u. sie festhaltenden Erde ; Nic. Th. 724 ἰσχία δʼ αὔτως μάλκη ἐνισκίμπτουσα κατήριπεν ἔχματα γούνων, vom Schol. τοὺς δεσμοὺς τῶν μελῶν καὶ γονάτων, νεῦρα καὶ μύας erkl. – So sind auch Il. 14.410 ἔχματα νηῶν nach dem Schol. ἐρείσματα πρὸς τὸ μὴ ἔνθα καὶ ἔνθα κλίνεσθαι, die Stützen unter den aufs Land gezogenen Schiffen, die sie halten.
