ὀπυίω

ὀπυίω, Att. ὀπύω Arist. EN 1148b32, Moer. p.278 P., also Cerc. 17.41 (Hsch. gives ὀπυόλαι· γεγαμηκότες), used by Hom. only in pres., and in impf. with or without augm.: fut. ὀπύσω [ῡ] Ar. Ach. 255.—Ep. Verb, used also in Cret. (v. infr.) and later Att. Prose:

• • I Act., of the man, marry, take to wife (= τὸ κατὰ νόμον μίγνυσθαι, Hsch. s.v. βεινεῖν), τὴν Εὔμηλος ὄπυιε Od. 4.798, cf. 2.207, Il. 16.178; πρεσβυτάτην δʼ ὤπυιε 13.429, cf. 18.383; τοῦ γὰρ ὀπυίεις παῖδα Hes. Sc. 356; δῶκεν ὀπυίειν θυγατέρα ἥν Id. Th. 819, cf. Pi. I. 4(3).59, Ar. l.c.; αἰ δέ κα . . ὁ ἐπιβάλλων ἡβίονσαν λείονσαν ὀπυίεθθαι μὴ λῇ ὀπυίεν if . . the man whose right it is does not wish to marry her, though she is of marriageable age and willing to marry, Leg.Gort. 7.42: abs., πέντε δέ τοι φίλοι υἷες . ., οἱ δύʼ ὀπυίοντες, τρεῖς δʼ ἠΐθεοι θαλέθοντες two wedded. etc., Od. 6.63.
  • • 2 Pass., of the woman, to be married, τόν ῥʼ ἐξ Αἰσύμηθεν ὀπυιομένη τέκε μήτηρ Il. 8.304, cf. Solon ap. Plu. Sol. 20; αἰ κύσαιτο καὶ τέκοι ϝοικέα μὴ ὀπυιομένα Leg.Gort. 4.19: c. dat., αἰ δὲ τῷ αὐτῷ αὖτιν ὀπυίοιτο πρὸ τῶ ἐνιαυτῶ ib. 4.
  • II later, in Act., merely to have connexion with a woman, Cerc. l.c., Luc. Eun. 12, Merc.Cond. 41, etc.:—Pass., of the woman, οὐκ ὀπύουσιν ἀλλʼ ὀπύονται [γυναῖκες] Arist. l.c., cf. AP 10.56.7 (Pall.); ἔνθʼ ἂν εὕρῃ τὸν ἄρρενα ὑπὸ τῆς θηλείας ὀπυιόμενον D.H. 19.2. (ὀπύ(σ)yω, cf. ὀπυσ-τύς and perh. Skt. pusyati ‘nourish’, ‘maintain’.)

ὀπυίω, att. ὀπύω, nach Moeris attisch für das hellenistische συγγίνεσθαι, ehelichen, zur Frau nehmen u. haben ; πρεσβυτάτην δʼ ὤπυιε θυγατρῶν, Il. 13.429 ; τοὶ Χαρίτων μίαν δώσω ὀπυιέμεναι, καὶ σὴν κεκλῆσθαι ἄκοιτιν, 14.268, öfter, immer von der rechtmäßigen Ehe ; auch absolut, οἱ δύʼ ὀπυίοντες, zwei verheiratet, Od. 6.63 ; einmal bei Hom. auch pass., τὸν ὀπυιομένη τέκε μήτηρ, Il. 8.304 ; Ἥβαν ὀπυίει, Pind. I. 3.77 ; ὅστις σʼ ὀπύσει, Ar. Ach. 243 ; Ap.Rh. 1.46 ; Theocr. 22.161 ; Pallad. 5 (X.56); auch in späterer Prosa, ὅτι αἱ γυναῖκες οὐκ ὀπυίουσιν ἀλλʼ ὀπυίονται, Arist. Eth. 7.5 ; ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς ὀπυίεσθαι, Plut. Sol. 20 ; Luc. Gall. 16 u. öfter ; s. Pierson zu Moeris p. 278, der wie Porson zu Od. 4.798 die Form ὀπύω vorzieht.

ὀπυίω

To take or have to wife, marry : ὅς [μιν] ἀναφανδὸν ὄπυιεν Il. 16.178, τὴν ὤπυιε ἀμφιγυήεις Il. 18.383. Cf. Il. 13.379, 429, Il. 14.268 : Od. 2.207, 336, Od. 4.798, Od. 15.21, Od. 16.386.

Absol. in pres. pple., a married man : οἱ δύʼ ὀπυίοντες Od. 6.63.

In pass., of the woman, to be taken to wife, be married : ἐξ αἰσύμηθεν ὀπυιομένη Il. 8.304.
