Ordovices
- a people of Britain, Tac. A. 12, 33; id. Agr. 18, 4.
ORDOVICES(Ὀρδούῒκες, Ptol. 2.3.18), a people on the W. coast of Britannia Romana, opposite to the island of Mona. They occupied the NW. portion of Wales, or that lying between Cardigan Bayand the river Dee, viz., Montgomeryshire, Merionethshire, Caernarvonshire, Denbighshire, and Flintshire. (Camden, p. 777; Tac. Ann. 12.33, Agric. 18.)
[T.H.D]A people of Britain, occupying what would correspond at the present day to the northern portion of Wales, together with the island of Anglesey (Hist. xii. 33). It was probably owing to the nature of their country and to the vicinity of Deva, now Chester, where a whole Roman legion was quartered, that the Romans had so few towns and stations among the Ordovices. Mediomanium was their capital, and was probably situated at May wood or Meifad, in Montgomeryshire.
