veterani
Veterāni
During the later Republican period and under the Empire a term applied to those who at the end of their time of military service retired from the legion. They were kept with the army under the standard, under which they were taken to the military colonies appointed for them, and again served there for an indefinite period. See evocati; exercitus; legio; and vexillarii.
