ὀλολύζω, Od. 22.411, etc.: fut. -ύξομαι E. El. 691, later -ύξω LXX Is. 16.7, Am. 8.3: aor. ὠλόλυξα, Ep. ὀ. (v. infr.):—

• cry with a loud voice, in Hom. esp. of women crying aloud to the gods in prayer or thanksgiving, ὣς εἰποῦσʼ ὀλόλυξε· θεὰ δέ οἱ ἔκλυεν ἀρῆς Od. 4.767, cf. h.Ap. 445; αἱ δʼ ὀλόλυξαν, at a sacrifice, Od. 3.450; of a cry of exultation, ἴθυσέν ῥʼ ὀλολύξαι 22.408, cf. 411; also of the cries of goddesses, h.Ap. 119; so later, mostly of women crying to the gods, ὀλολύξατε νῦν ἐπὶ μολπαῖς A. Eu. 1043 (lyr.); ὠλόλυξεν ἐν μέσαις σταθεῖσα Βάκχαις E. Ba. 689; mostly in sign of joy (cf. ὀλολυγή), ἢν μὲν ἔλθῃ πύστις εὐτυχὴς σέθεν, ὀλολύξεται πᾶν δῶμα Id. El. 691, cf. Ar. Eq. 1327, Theoc. 17.64; μὴ φλαῦρον μηδὲν γρύζειν, ἀλλʼ ὀ. Ar. Pax 97; ἐπὶ τῷ μηδένα πώποτε τηλικοῦτʼ ὀλολύξαι σεμνυνόμενος D. 18.259; ὠλόλυξαν μὲν αἱ γυναῖκες, ἠλάλαξαν δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες Hld. 3.5; of nymphs crying aloud to Hecate, A.R. 3.1218.

ὀλολύζω, (λύζω), fut. ὀλολύξω, mit lauter Stimme schreien ; eigtl. von der ὀλολυγών, Eust. 1399.49 ; bes. zu den Göttern schreien, sowohl um sie anzuflehen, als ihnen zu danken, αἱ δʼ ὀλόλυξαν θυγατέρες τε νυοί τε καὶ αἰδοίη παράκοιτις, Od. 3.450, 4.767, 22.408, 411, H.h. Apoll. 445, immer von Frauen gesagt, wie auch H.h. Apoll. 119 von schreienden Göttinnen ; ὀλολύξατε νῦν ἐπὶ μολπαῖς, Aesch. Eum. 995, jauchzet auf, vor Freude ; Eur. Bacch. 688 ; auch im med., ὀλολύξεται πᾶνδῶμα, El. 691 ; Ar. Pax 97 ; bei Dem. 28.259 est bes. der laute Ton des Schreiens damit bezeichnet, μὴ γὰρ οἴεσθʼ αὐτὸν φθέγγεσθαι μὲν οὕτω μέγα, ὀλολύζειν δὲ οὐχ ὑπέρλαμπρον ; in späterer Prosa, Luc. D.D. 12.1.
