Mantoche

MANTOCHE Haute-Saône, France.

A site on the right bank of the Saône near two fords. Its importance as a crossing place from prehistoric times on is attested by finds made whenever the river is dredged. Tumuli have yielded four 6th c. Greek amphorae. From the Roman era there is a large villa between the canal and the Saône, only partially excavated, where a mosaic with marine motif was found; a factory which produced tiles and ordinary pottery; a cemetery in which a sarcophagus was found with a lid bearing a bust of the deceased in the center and tragic masks at the corners.
