ἀνοκωχεύω, to hold back
ἀνοκωχεύω, Ion. ἀνακ-,
- hold back, stay, hinder, ἀ. τὰς νέας keep them riding at anchor, Hdt. 6.116 (cf. Hsch. s.v. ἀνακωχεύω), etc.: metaph., of a chariot, hold it in, keep it back, S. El. 732; also ἀ. πόλεμον D.H. 9.16.
- 2 ἀ. τὸν τόνον τῶν ὅπλων keep up the tension of the ropes, keep them taut, Hdt. 7.36.
- 3 keep afloat, Arist. Cael. 313a23.
- II also intr. (sc. ἑαυτόν), keep still, Hdt. 9.13; hold back, of ships, D.S. 11.18.—The form ἀνακωχέω support, relieve strain upon, is found in Hp. Art. 9, 38, Mochl. 2.
