ἀντιάω

ἀντιάω, Hom. uses pres. only in the Ep. forms ἀντιόω, inf. ἀντιάαν, 3 pl. imper. ἀντιοώντων, part. ἀντιόων, όωσα, όωντες; but ἀντιόω, which is pres. in Il. 1.31, 23.643, serves as fut. in 13.752: fut. ἀντιάσω [ᾰ] Od. 22.28, Thgn. (v. infr.): aor. ἠντίᾰσα Hom. (these two tenses in form belong to ἀντιάζω; but such instances as belong in sense to ἀντιάω are given here):—Med., once in Hom. (v. infr.), A.R. 1.470, 2.24: (ἀντί, ἀντίος):—

• • IEp. Verb: go for the purpose of meeting or receiving:
  • • 1 c. gen. rei, go in quest of, when an aim or purpose is implied, πολέμοιο μενοίνα ἀντιάαν Il. 13.215; ὄφρα πόνοιο . . ἀντιάσητον 12.3; οὐκέτʼ ἀέθλων ἄλλων ἀντιάσεις Od. 22.28, al.: metaph. of an arrow, hit, ἀλλά κεν ἢ στέρνων ἢ νηδύος ἀντιάσειε Il. 13.290:— often of the gods, come (as it were) to meet an offering, and so, in past tenses, to have received, accepted it, ἀντιόων ταύρων τε καὶ ἀρνειῶν ἑκατόμβης Od. 1.25; ἀρνῶν κνίσης αἰγῶν τε τελείων . . ἀντιάσας Il. 1.67; generally, partake of, enjoy, αἲ γὰρ . . ὀνήσιος ἀντιάσειεν Od. 21.402; so ἔργων ἀντιάσεις χαλεπῶν Thgn. 1308; οὔτε του τάφου ἀντιάσας οὔτε γόων S.   • IV c. acc. rei, only in ἐμὸν λέχος ἀντιόωσα, euphem. for sharing it, only in Il. 1.31.
  • V approach as a suppliant, supplicate, like ἀντιάζω I.2, only in later Ep., c. gen. pers., A.R. 1.703: also c. acc. pers., Id. 3.694: c. acc. rei, ib. 717.
  • VI ἀντιόωσα σελήνη dub. in Orph. Fr. 168.16.

ἀντιάω, (ἀντί, ἀντίος), praes. Hom. ἀντιόω ; fut. ἀντιάσω, aor. ἀντιάσαι, die des kurzen α wegen zu ἀντιάζω gerechnet werden können, das im praes. bei Hom. nicht vorkommt ; ἀντιόω ist Il. 13.752 fut., vgl. Od. 1.25, 24.56;
entgegenkommen, begegnen, in freundlichern. feindlicher Absicht, dah.
1) angreifen, τινός, Il. 7.231 ἡμεῖς δʼ εἰμὲν τοῖοι οἳ ἂν σέθεν ἀντιάσαιμεν ; ohne casus 15.297, Widerstand leisten ; – bes. von Sachen, wo immer der gen. steht, wenn ein absichtliches danach Ausgehen, ein Aufsuchen ausgedrückt wird ; vgl. Buttmann Lexil. I.p. 8 ff.; πολέμοιο, μάχης, auf Krieg, Kampf ausgehen, Il. 12.368, 20.125 ; πόνου, ἔργων, ἀέθλων 12.356, 23.643, Od. 22.28 ; dah. vom Geschoß, das die Brust trifft, auf die es gerichtet war, Il. 13.299 στέρνων ἀντιάσειεν. – Auch von den Göttern, die ein Opfer annehmen, genießen, ἑκατόμβης, ἱρῶν, αἰγῶν κνίσης, Od. 1.25, 3.436, Il. 1.67 ; auch im med., γάμου ἀντιάασθε Il. 24.62. – Uebh. teilhaftig werden, empfangen, ὀνήσιος Od. 21.402 ; 24.56 ἔρχεται, οὗ παιδὸς τεθνηότος ἀντιόωσα, sie kommt, um ihn bestatten zu helfen.
2) zufällig mit Jemandem zusammentreffen, mit dem dat., Od. 18.147 ; ἐμῷ μένει ἀντιόωσιν, sie kommen meinem Zorn in den Weg, Il. 6.127, 21.151 ; auch ohne Casus, ἀντιάσας, der erste beste Begegnende, Od. 13.312 ; θεὸν ἀντιάσαντα Il. 10.551 ; νεώτερον ἀντιάσαντα Od. 7.293 ; verschieden erklärt wird οὔτʼ οὖν (τῷ οὔτʼ) ἐσθῆτος δευήσεαι οὔτε τευ ἄλλου, ὧν ἐπέοιχʼ ἱκέτην ταλαπείριον ἀντιάσαντα Od. 6.193, 14.511.
3) mit dem acc., ἐμὸν λέχος ἀντιόωσα, = εὐτρεπίζουσα, mein Lager bereitend, nur Il. 1.31, welchen Vers Aristarch für unecht hielt, Scholl. Aristonic. 1.29.
4) nur bei Sp. Ep., Jemanden mit Bitten angehen, wie ἀντιάζω, τινά, Ap.Rh. 3.694.
Med. (außer Il. 24.62, s. unter 1), entgegentreten, c. acc., συνθέμενοι ἡμῖν τὸν Πέρσην ἀντιώσεσθαι Her. 9.7 ; widersprechen, Thuc. 2.40 ἂν ἠντιώμεθα Reisigs Conj. für ἠναντιώμεθα, welches Poppo wohl richtiger beibehält.
