φωνέω, 1) einen Laut od. Ton hervorbringen, bes. von Menschen, laut od. deutlich sprechen ; so von Hom. meist mit einem andern gleichbedeutenden Zeitworte verbunden, ἔπος φάτο φώνησέν τε, φωνήσας προσέφη, φωνήσας ἔπος ηὔδα, ἀμείβετο φώνησέν τε u. ä.; Od. 24.535 ὄπα φωνήσασα, die Stimme erschallen lassend ; vgl. 2.182, 10.512 ; μέγιστα φωνέειν, die Stimme aufs lauteste erheben, Her. 4.141, 7.117 ; εἶπεν φωνήσαις Pind. I. 5.49, u. öfter ; χρυσοῖς δὲ φωνεῖ γράμμασιν πρήσω πόλιν Aesch. Spt. 434 ; ὁ πρέσβυς τόδʼ εἶπε φωνῶν Ag. 198, u. oft, wie Soph. u. Eur., εὔφημα φώνει I.T. 687 ; auch von musikalischen Instrumenten, Or. 146 ; vom Singen, Theocr. 16.44 ; τὰ φωνηθέντα Plat. Soph. 262c ; Folgde.
2) τινά, anreden, wie man die häufige Vrbdg καί μιν φωνήσας ἔπεα πτερόεντα προσηύδα erkl., wo aber μίν richtiger von προσηύδα abhängig gemacht wird, er sprach die Stimme erhebend zu ihm die geflügelten Worte ; Soph. vrbdt Ζεῦ ἄνα, σοὶ φωνῶ, O.C. 1485.
Bei Namen rufen, Αἴαντα φωνῶ Soph. Aj. 73 ; Ap.Rh. 3.673 ; dah. φωνεῖσθαι = genannt werden, Nicand. bei Ath. XI.477b.
