1) die Schlachtreihe, Schlachtordnung ; Hom. im sing. nur Αἴας Τρώων ῥῆξε φάλαγγα Il. 6.6 ; gew. im plur., die Reihen od. Glieder der Schlachtordnung, Δαναοὶ ῥήξαντο φάλαγγας 11.90, u. öfter in dieser Vrbdg ; ὅθι πλεῖσται κλονέοντο φάλαγγες 11.148, 15.448, und sonst ; auch φάλαγγες ἀνδρῶν, 19.158 ; in der Od. kommt das Wort gar nicht vor ; Hes. Th. 935.
2) eine gewisse Schlachtordnung des griechischen, bes. des makedonischen Fußvolks, die auch von den Römern angenommen wurde u. gew. aus 16 Gliedern bestand, vgl. bes. Pol. 18.12, Plut. Mar. 25, aber auch von verschiedener Tiefe vorkommt, vgl. Thuc. 4.93, 5.68 ; ἐπὶ φάλαγγος ἄγειν, in einer Phalanx aufrücken lassen, Xen. Cyr. 1.6.43, καθίστασθαι, sich in Linie aufstellen, 6.3.21, τάττεσθαι, παράγειν, An. 4.3.26, ὅπως ἐπὶ φάλαγγος γένοιτο τὸ στράτευμα 4.6.6, im Ggstz von κατὰ κέρας, vgl.
