ἄπῠρος, ον,

without fire, in Hom. only of pots and tripods, that have not yet been on the fire, brand-new, ἕπτʼ ἀπύρους τρίποδας Il. 9.122, cf. 23.267.

  - 4 ἄ. χρυσίον unsmelted, opp. ἄπεφθον, Hdt. 3.97, IG 2.652B28 (but ἄ. χρυσός, of nuggets, or gold-dust, Arist. Mir. 833b8, D.S. 2.50, al.); ἄ. κύανος Thphr. Lap. 55; ἄ. τέχναι Aristid. Or. 37(2).13; θεῖον ἄ. native sulphur, Gal. 12.903.

ἄπυρος -ον [πῦρ]
1. zonder vuur: ἀπύρων ἱερῶν van offers zonder vuur Aeschl. Ag. 70; ἐν τ’ ἀπύρῳ οἴκῳ in een onverwarmde behuizing Hes. Op. 525.
2. bij Hom. van potten die nog niet op het vuur zijn geweest ongebruikt: ἄπυρον ... λέβητα een ongebruikt bekken Il. 23.267; niet door vuur bewerkt: ἄ. χρυσίον ongesmeed goud Hdt. 3.97.3.
3. vrij van koorts Hp.

   1) bei Hom. ἀπύρους τρίποδας Il. 8.122, 264, λέβητʼ ἄπυρον, ἀνθεμόεντα 23.885 ; ἄπυρον λέβητα, λευκὸν ἔτʼ αὔτως 23.267 : entweder die noch nicht ins Feuer gekommen, noch nicht gebraucht sind, oder die gar nicht zum Gebrauch im Feuer bestimmt sind ; letztere Erklärung ist die des Aristarch, Scholl. Aristonic. Il. 23.267 σημειοῦνταί τινες ὅτι ἄπυρον τὸν ἀναθηματικόν, ἕτερον τοῦ ἐμπυριβήτου ; vgl. Scholl. Il. 23.885, 9.122, 265, Apoll. Lex. Hom. 40.32 Athen. ΙΙ. 38a, ΧΙ, 501b ; ἄπυρος πινακίσκος B.A. 1.14, μήπω πυρὶ προσενηνεγμένος erkl.; ἄπυρα σκεύη Plat. Legg. III.679a, von Hesych. erkl. τὰ οὐ παρέχοντα χρῆσιν ἐν πυρί ; – Soph.    2) ἱερά, Opfer, bei denen nichts verbrannt wird, Pind. Ol. 7.48 ; θυσία Eur.; bei Clem.Al. ἄπυροι die Furien, denen kein Brandopfer gebracht wurde. Bei Aesch. Ag. 70 aber sind ἱερὰ ἄπυρα nicht gehörig dargebrachte, frevelhafte Opfer, wie auch Soph. bei Hesych. ἄπυρον für ἄθυτον braucht.
   3) ungekocht, οἶνος Alcm. bei Ath. I.31c ; μέλι Luc. Navig. 23 ; σιτία Plut.; ἄκολοι Leon.Tar. 45 (IX.563); τροφή Suid. Häufig χρυσός, roh, im Ggstz von ἄπεφθος, Her. 3.97 ; Arist. Mir. Ausc. 45 ; DS. 2.5 ; Antiphil. 21 (IX.310). Ebenso θεῖον ἄπυρον, Diosc.; Plin. 35.15.
   4) bei den Aerzten, ohne Fieberhitze.

B) ἄρδις ἄπυρος, Aesch. Prom. 882, feuergleich, wie Feuer brennend, Schol. πολύπυρος, also mit dem α copulativ. gebildet ; Andere erkl. vielleicht richtiger : nicht im Feuer gewesen, nicht geschmiedet, da ἄρδις hier uneigentlich gesagt ist.
