λόφος, ὁ (nach den alten Gramm. von λέπω, wie δειρή von δέρω),
1) eigtl. der Nacken der Zugtiere, der unter das Joch gespannt, von diesem gerieben wird ; von Pferden, πολὺς δʼ ἀνεκήκιεν ἱδρὼς ἵππων ἔκ τε λόφων καὶ ἀπὸ στέρνοιο, Il. 23.508 ; aber auch vom Halse des Menschen, 10.573 ; οὐδʼ ὑπὸ ζυγῷ λόφον δικαίως εἶχον Soph. Ant. 292, den Nacken unter dem Joch halten, d.i. geduldig gehorchen.
2) wahrscheinlich von der Mähne auf dem Nacken der Pferde entnommen, Helmbusch, oft bei Hom., bei dem er immer aus Pferdehaaren zu sein scheint, κυνέην – ἵππουριν, δεινὸν δὲ λόφος καθύπερθεν ἔνευεν, Il. 16.138, Od. 22.124, vgl. Il. 6.469, 15.537 ; Hephästus bildet diesen aus Gold nach, ἔθειραι χρύσεαι, ἃς Ἥφαιστος ἵει λόφον ἀμφὶ δασείας, Il. 19.383, vgl. 18.612, 22.316 ; τρεῖς κατασκίους λόφους σείει Aesch. 4) übertr. sagt Ar. Ran. 923 ῥήματα ὀφρῦς καὶ λόφους ἔχοντα, was auf die erste od. zweite Bdtg zurückzuführen ist u. ὑψηλὰ καὶ ὑπερήφανα erkl. wird, sich wie die Mähnen hoch aufsträubende Worte.
