συναίτιος

συναίτιος, ον, also α, ον (v. infr. 2):

• • • 1 c. gen. rei et dat. pers., being the joint or contributory cause of a thing which benefits another, σ. τινὶ ἀθανασίας helping him towards . ., Isoc. 5.33, cf. ib. 44; εἰ τῶν πεπραγμένων ἐκείνοις μηδὲν σ. ἐγενόμην if I had contributed nothing to their success, Id. 15.96; πᾶσιν ἀγαθοῦ σ. ὤν X. Cyr. 1.4.15, etc.
    • 2 c. gen. rei only, being joint-cause of, accessory to, contributing to, Pl. Plt. 281c, Grg. 519b, D. 18.64, Thphr. Sens. 27, etc.; σ. τούτου συνειπὼν Φιλοκράτει by acting as his advocate, D. 19.97: as Subst., ἡ ξυναιτία φόνου accomplice in murder, A. Ag. 1116 (lyr.); δοξάζεται . . οὐ συναίτια, ἀλλʼ αἴτια εἶναι τῶν πάντων Pl. Ti. 46d.
    • 3 abs., being a joint or concurrent cause, contributory, Id. Plt. 287b, Arist. de An. 416a14, Gal. 15.303, 19.393; ἀναγκαῖον λέγεται, οὗ ἄνευ οὐκ ἐνδέχεται ζῆν ὡς συναιτίου Arist. Metaph. 1015a21.

Ag. 1087, τινί τινος, πόλις συναιτία, Isocr. 5.33, wenn man dies nicht als subst. συναιτία betrachten will ; Plat. vrbdt δοξάζεται δὲ ὑπὸ τῶν πλείστων οὐ ξυναίτια, ἀλλʼ αἴτια εἶναι τῶν πάντων, Tim. 46d, wie οὐκ αἰτίων ὄντων τῶν κακῶν, ἀλλʼ ἴσως συναιτίων, Gorg. 519b, vgl. Polit. 287b ; συναιτίας οὔσας 281c ; aber πάσας ξυναιτίους εἴπωμεν ib.e, τῶν ἀγαθῶν ὤν, Xen. Cyr. 5.5.33.
